If your child has misaligned teeth from an early age, you may be investigating the options for early orthodontics. Invisalign First is a popular early teeth straightening solution as it can improve children’s smiles as they grow. Here at Kids Dental, it is one of the treatments we recommend to children under the age of 13 whose teeth need a little help to move into a desirable position as they grow into adulthood.  Let’s take a look at what the treatment involves and what you and your child need to be aware of to ensure that the treatment is effective.

What is Invisalign First?

Invisalign First is a teeth straightening treatment designed for young smiles. It can be used from 6 years of age, to develop young jaws and make space for adult teeth to come through.

As we spot the early signs of orthodontic issues, it can be beneficial to treat them now with a system such as Invisalign for Kids to help prevent more complex and costly issues into adulthood.

Invisalign First can be used to solve a wide range of dental issues including:

  • Overcrowding
  • Narrow dental arches
  • Spaces between teeth

The treatment involves using a series of custom made aligners, that are tailor made to your child’s mouth and will be changed every week to gradually move the teeth into a more desirable position. The aligners apply targeted forces to the teeth and dental arches to start moving the teeth as they grow and the mouth develops.

Treatment typically takes around 18 months, but this is dependent on the severity of the case. As a parent you will probably be able to notice the changes to your child’s mouth after just a few weeks or months, as the teeth start to move.

How To Support Your Child When They’re Wearing Invisalign First Aligners

As the aligners are removable, to allow for easy brushing and normal eating and drinking, there is a risk that they will be taken out for too long or lost. As a parent, you can support your child by making sure they keep their aligners in when not eating, drinking or brushing. You can make sure they keep the aligners in their designated cases when not in use and also ensure that they switch to a new aligner as instructed – usually at the end of every week.

Even though the aligners will be removed for eating and drinking, they still need to be cleaned every day to remove debris and bacteria that would otherwise transfer to the teeth. The best way to do this is:

  • Rinse the aligner under the cold water
  • Use a small soft bristled toothbrush (not the one your child uses to brush their teeth) and a small amount of gentle soap to brush out the aligner.
  • Rinse again in water.

If you’re worried about your child wearing a brace, there is really nothing to fear, as Invisalign for kids treatments have been designed with comfort and ease of use in mind. There are no metal brackets or wires to become damaged or cause cuts. The plastic aligners are very durable and they only need to last for around a week as they then get discarded and changed for the next one.
